The office of Diocesan Bishop Andrew D. Smith oversees canonically assigned responsibilities, including the recruitment, deployment, and nurture of priests, and the policy and governance of the diocese. He is specifically involved with the Cathedral Chapter, Standing Committee, Commission on Ministry, Bishop's Fund for Children, and Bishop's Convocation for Prayer.
Biography
Bishop Smith currently serves on the Program, Budget and Finance Committee of The Episcopal Church. He is a trustee of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale in New Haven and is currently president of the Christian Conference of Connecticut, an ecumenical networking and advocacy organization comprised of the leaders of Christian judicatories in the state.
Bishop Andrew Donnan Smith was born in Albany, New York in 1944, and attended public schools in North Plainfield, New Jersey. He received a B.A. in 1965 from Trinity College, Connecticut, and an M.Div. in 1968 from Episcopal Theological School (later Episcopal Divinity School) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was ordained priest in 1969 in the Diocese of Connecticut. He has served as curate at Trinity, Hartford from 1968-71; assistant at St. John's, Waterbury 1971-76; rector at St. Michael's, Naugatuck 1976-85 and rector at St. Mary's, Manchester 1985-96, all in Connecticut.
In October 1995, he was elected bishop suffragan and consecrated in May 1996. In June 1999 Bishop Smith was elected Connecticut's 14th diocesan bishop. He was invested in the office on October 16, 1999. Bishop Smith received an honorary doctoral degree in October 2000 from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.
He is married to Kate Carroll Trafford, a retired school media specialist-librarian. They have two adult daughters, Rachel and Rebecca. Bishop Smith maintains his office at the diocesan administrative headquarters at 1335 Asylum Avenue, Hartford.
