Ministry Exploration and Education Program (MEEP)

Ministry Exploration and Education Program
An article by the Rev. Malcolm Barnum, former archdeacon of the Diocese of Connecticut, written for the Dec. 2001 issue of Fanning the Embers

Are there any lay people in your parish who seem ready for "the next step" in their ministry but don't know quite what to do? Perhaps there are some who have servant hearts but aren't really focused on the use of their gifts. And, maybe there are a few who would just like to know more about the scripture and theology and church history to strengthen their day-to-day life.

The Ministry Exploration and Education Program (MEEP) could be the answer. As a clergy person you are in an ideal position to identify these people and to recommend this special opportunity for them to deepen their ministry.

MEEP is a two year diocesan program designed to build one's knowledge of Scripture, church history, theology, and ethics, to develop the experience of servant ministry, and, particularly, to open one's awareness to the process of discernment. The outcome of this program is to enhance the ability of listening to God's call. For many this call may be to a special ministry in the world. For others it may be expanding and strengthening their ministry in the church. And, for others it may be a call to ministry as a deacon or priest.

This program benefits your congregation as well as the participant. It can develop new leadership, open new ministries, create a broader awareness of the important opportunities for the Church in the broader community. The ultimate success of MEEP for your church comes through your raising up the individuals and giving them creative support in effectively utilizing their knowledge, skills, and experience.

A MEEP class begins in the fall of odd numbered years. There are meetings every other Saturday for nine months each year plus a commitment of ten to twelve hours each week. We hope you will give this high priority. It is never too soon to begin thinking about who might be candidates from your parish.
